I will be flying to Frankfurt, Germany in December and plan on taking the Eurail into Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. I have the 6 day, 4 country pass. Has anyone done this before? If so, do you know approximately how much I will have to pay for reservations and supplements? Also, are overnight trains worth it? Won't I be wasting a travel day by doing that? (Don't you have to fill in the date of travel as the following day if you take a night train?)

Thanks for the two of you that have answered so far. This will be my first trip taking the train, so I'm excited but a little nervous too!

I've gone through 4 eurail passes of all different sorts. Night trains are always worth it because you don't have to pay for hotels - 5 euros for a seat, 15 for 6 person couchette, 20 for 4 person, 50 for 2, 100 for private - those are the supplements.

you picked the right countries, because those are the most expensive train systems. I would highly reccomend reservations in Italy, I've been on train there that are packed.

in italy they have "intercity plus" which the conductor told me the pass was not valid on, he was full of crap, but watch out.

when you get on the night train, if it leaves after 19:00, you fill in the next day....I've used this feature to go through as many as 4 countries in a single 24 (plus 5) hour period....

overnight trains rule because you arrive reasonably fresh and can just dump you bags in the lockers in the station....

one rule: DO NOT OVERPACK - you will regret it. if you have doubts, leave it at home.

While I don't know about Eurail travel, I know that any train system that you go on in Germany, Austria, Switerland, or even Italy will be good.
The ICE trains in Germany are clean, fast, semi-cheap, and they get you to where you want to go.
Same goes for any train system in Europe.
Have fun!
