I only have 2 settings. Moderately hot (it's set on the highest setting and it barely gets hot enough to make a comfortable shower) and freezing cold. How do I fix it?

Hot water heaters have a life of 5 to 15 years depending on quality, type of water, and luck. Check your's age. It appears that you need a new one.

HI, I AM A PLUMBER AND YOUR PROBLEM IS PROBABLY THE HEATING ELEMENT, THE SERIAL NUMBER ON YOUR HEATER WILL TELL YOU THE AGE OF IT, IF IT IS ONLY 10 YEARS OR SO OLD I WOULD REPLACE THE ELEMENT INSTEAD OF THE HEATER, TO REPLACE THEM TURN OFF THE ELECTRIC BREAKER AND MAKE SURE IT IS THE RIGHT ONE, THEN TURN OFF THE WATER AND DRAIN TANK WITH GARDEN HOSE, GET 2 NEW ELEMENTS AND A WRENCH FOR THEM, TAKE OFF THE PANELS REMOVE WIRES SCREW OLD ONES OUT OND NEW ONES IN, MAKE SURE TANK IS EMPTY FIRST THOUGH, AFTER BOTH ARE NEW FILL THE TANK WITH WATER AND TURN A HOT WATER FAUCET ON SO THE AIR WILL BE RELEASED AND NOT TRAPPED IN THE TANK, AFTER YOU HAVE ALL WATER AND NO AIR COMING OUT THE HOT WATER SIDE OF FAUCET CHECK FOR LEAKS , PUT WIRES BACK ON, PUT PANELS BACK ON AND LAST TURN THE ELECTRIC BACK ON TO THE HEATER AND HOPEFULLY WILL FIX YOUR PROBLEM, GOOD LUCK.

Your element may be going out. You might want to have someone check it, if this came on lately. I've had elements replaced several times, and it's usually because of hard water deposits.

You prob. need someone to come in and give it a through check up. Your burners may need to be cleaned out. When I replaced mine, they told me they only last about 15 years, but I am no expert.

It's dead. Get a hose on one end and put the other end outside and drain her...Time to get another one. Unless you're lucky, call your landlord if you rent!
