While driving the car with the A/C on the car's RPMs go up and down making the car slow down and speed up. The A/C works fine it's cold as can be it's just the car jumps and lurches while driving. When I turn off the A/C it's fine. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

Actually yes the AC was recently charged I believe 3 or 4 months ago. So it could be that it was over charged?

The air conditioner works by the engine turning the compressor. As the compressor's clutch kicks in and back off, you'll notice a difference in the car's power. The 96 Cavalier has a 2.2 liter 4 cylinder engine, and a load like the ac compressor is substantial enough to make the car 'bog down', especially on hills.

The only real fix is to get a car witha larger engine, or go with open windows instead of ac.

Using the A/C is hard on a car, especially one with such a small engine. Its a huge power drain.. ever notice a similar effect with the rear window defrost in the winter?

Power down those windows and let the wind take over, more environmentally friendly anyway..

Cheers!

It's probably normal.
It takes a lot of power to run an Air Conditioner Compressor.
Any vehicle will lose some amount of power while the compressor cycles.

Has the AC been worked on recently? If it is overcharged, it will cause this concern as the compressor will be more difficult to turn.
