I might be wrong, but seems to me the salary (depending on how far you take it) are about the same, and both are concentration type jobs with responsibility.

Last I heard to become a pharmacist you had to become a doctor first then choose your specialty, and becoming a doctor takes 4 years of college, 2 or more specialization...and a huge lump of money that if you don't have any saved or even part saved will take you a real long time to pay off.

There is a definite need for pharmacists and doctors these days, and they run in their own social circles and status and maybe the status, recognition, etc. is what your parents are after so maybe you would fit into their lifestyle and with their friends, and make connections to a lifelong partner, and they can be proud to introduce you to their friends and connections. Maybe they have no connections regarding computers.

Go and talk to a pharmacist. Both at the chain store and a private pharmacy. Get an appointment with them and really talk to them. It will help more than random comments here.

Also, Follow your Bliss... do what makes you happy. Seriously. BUT remember it is VERY hard to be happy when you don't have enough to pay the rent.... or food... or toilet paper. Been there. Done that. Back up plans are very important. Pharmacists usually get good pay and can get jobs with steady hours. These things are important if you want to live a life outside of work. Just something to think about. Good luck!

It takes a minimum of six years to become a pharmacist: 2 years undergrad and 4 of pharmacy school. You have to be very careful when looking at average pharmacist salaries because a sizeable number are part time only. Full time pharmacists in the Chicago area start close to 100k.
Choose whatever will make you happy. This is one of the biggest choices of your entire life. Be slow and cautious.
