Just because I remember something doesn't necessarily make it true, does it? We have paper documents that seem to prove things. What if I destroyed those records and I am the only one who knows or remembers something? Did it in fact occur, then?

A minor example - I walk into the kitchen, see milk sitting out on the counter, and think, "Oh yes, I left that milk on the counter." That event is only in my mind. If it did occur, it is over. How do I know somebody else didn't put the milk there? How can I rely on my memory? Experiments with eyewitnesses prove that memory is unreliable. Maybe we are all making up our own memories!

What about if 2 or more people remember the same thing? Does that still make it true?

Wow, I could go on and on with this one.

Very beautiful approach of thinking! Bravo!

What else I could think of is our physical growth. But again we will not know that we have grown when we dont remember.

You have thrown a very intersting point to brood about.

Thanks

A leaf falls from a tree... and the world will never be the same. Theoretically anything and everything you do leaves an indelible physical mark. If you can find or not those marks - that is a very different story. Imagine you "remembered" having done something you never did, no matter how hard or how long or the resources you use, it's a lost cause - no proof is there of something that never happened. On the contrary if something really happened, the proofs are there and if sufficient time, effort, and resources are dedicated you will always come up with a detail, no matter how small that proves the event.

Of course there are cases of false memories, forgotten memories and all that. That doesn't mean the occurrences didn't happen per se, it just means that nobody will remember them. If every book had been lost about Lincoln nobody would remember that he was president. But slavery would still be illegal and the USA would still be whole. So it happened and it still has an effect, we simply can't discuss it anymore

Here's a scenario:
My mom remembers having sex with a man, she remembers the exact date, the place and the events leading up to the encounter. I am a product of that event.
However, the man refuses to acknowledge that it happened, he refuses to acknowledge the possibility that I am his offspring, yet I am here to answer your question.
You tell me, did the event take place, or was it just a memory that my mom thinks she has?

Cool question,

I had this experience once, we went to a boyscout camp, and wondered off, so we rocked up at this party, and they started giving everybody pills to feel better. Im the only one that didnt take... and now im the only one that remember that.

Im more than sure that it happened, cause we did go to the camp. How can i trust my memory if its only me that remebers this?

Please don't mess with my mind. All memory is unreliable, you should put survaillance cameras in your house and car if you want to be sure. Questioning witnesses at an accident scene will always reveal opinion not fact.

Did you really ask this question or did somebody on a mushroom hallucinogen enter your room, secretly type this in and submit it. Wait did I just type in this answer or did a Umpa-Lumpa with purple tights and a shower cap on his orange haired head sneak in and do it? I could go on and on with this one...

It is true that we can have memories for "non-events" because we believe that they should have happened. This website has an excellent demonstration of such phenomena:
