I think it comes from laziness on the part of the person who is saying it. And, it seems the youth use it more than the older folks, who presumably have had more and better education, payed attention in class, wanted to make themselves seen as better educated!
Another sentence that seems to be used mainly by black youth is: "Know what i'm sayin'?" It seems to be a fetish of the" Feeling like they belong" idea. Used a lot by gang members, and "wannabe's"!
And then, some youth don't want to be accused of "Acting white", so they go along with the slang talk, and the ghetto and gang actions! They act up in class, don't study, live with the other gang members, and generally never learn how to fit in-keeping the gangsta look and actions, until they are either dead or in jail forever!
I worked with 4 black men in a local auto body shop, many years ago! they were great people to work with, didn't have the hang-ups that some blacks have today. And they did good work! And they used good language, but the latest black gang language hadn't come along yet, or it wasn't shown on TV, which reinforced the new gang banger stuff!
Don't know how it will get better, what with TV making it all seem "hip" but you never can tell. Maybe they will get the message: You can't make folks like you by hating them!"

Although I try to speak properly there is something to take into account also. The correct way of speaking was "decided on" by a white person. I am originally a northerner, but have relatives in the south. If you want to hear someone truelly butcher the English language...try going to Mississippi, NC, SC, and Georgia.

I am not one of these people. Most blacks I know speak very well. BUT.... (there is always a but, isn't there), why do you limit your question to blacks? I experience, daily, white girls and boys who think they are black, dress and talk as if they were in that culture, and intentionally mispronounce words that they think will make them acceptable in the Gangsta movement. I have to wonder what is going to happen to Whites and Blacks when it comes time to find a job...this kind of language is unacceptable outside small circles of what is in at the moment. good luck

True, not all do. But you portrey yourselves as African American instead of American and all your c-rap stars and blaks in the media do say ax and aks for ask. These are the stereotypes you bring forward in your choice to separate yourselves. I am an American. I am not an _______ American. Stop segregating yourselves and putting forth the comic sterotype of yourselves and then you may just see some changes. As a smart person, take charge and educate "your" people to the fact that they are people and not anyone's "your". Take charge as an American. Hope this helps explain in some way.

it is in simple terms an accessory, have self belief it or not everybody has one. Langauges evolve, words be replaced. there is the variety of seperation between extremely some white and black people who interior the main segregated factors, the langauge replaced in yet in any different case. it is a headache to attempt and get the toddlers I prepare to spell "ask" although... they like to spell it "aks" the different one that I extremely have extremely some problems with is saying "scr-" as a replace of "str-" like "street" gets written "screet."

This is true, but a lot of them do. For instance most black people refer to Wal-mart as "Wal-mark", I know u agree with me on that. Also I feel that the use of "Ebonics" is the reason behind most mispronounced words. It's not that blacks don't know what's proper, they just think it sounds cool to use what I believe is called "Slang".

Many people are ignorant. There are stereotypes for all nationalities, and it's the same with all of them. Because of some people in a certain race, unfortunately all people in that race are stereotyped. Some of us view individuals instead of whole groups.

That's all some people hear them say, and the rest may just be prejudiced and looking for a reason to look down on blacks and grasp at that.

I agree. It's mainly dialect, such as people from the south and so on. I only know fee or fo that speak that way, and fie who don't. (kidding).
