Just deposit it and see if it bounces or not!
Don't write that check into your balance (i.e., pretend that money's not there) until it clears. That way if the check is bad, you won't write any bad checks if it bounces.

Call the bank the writer used and give the account number and amount written; the bank will tell you if there are enough funds to cover the check right now. But by the time you get to the bank, funds could have been removed. my advise is to go to the bank as soon as you know there are funds available and cash the check.

It depends on the policies adopted by the nation for banks. At least in India, you can get helplines to find out if the cheque is genuine or not. The bank must provide you help if the cheque is on your own name> If you could write the name of the country I could provide you the information you wanted.

yes either call the customer service line or you can also go into one of the branches the check is drawn off of...they will let you know. The only thing they can't tell you is how much is (or is not/negative) the account is.
