Films can be incredibly powerful experiences - you will generally find that 'art house', Independant or european films are more powerful than most of hollywoods output, they can also though be a bit heavy, slow or even sometimes almost unwatchable. here is a short list of some of the films that i have found to be quite amazing experiences - some more accessible than others - the first ones are probably more similar to the films you mention above, further down the list the films get more 'arty' but arguably more rewarding... hope you enjoy some of em...
Adaptation - Spike Jonze (screenplay by Charlie Kaufman)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind - Michel Gondry (again written by Kaufman)
Pi - Darren Aranofsky
The Life Aquatic - Wes Anderson
A clockwork Orange - Stanley Kubrick
2001 - Stanley Kubrick
Don't Look Now - Nicolas Roeg
The Vanishing - George Sluizer (original Dutch version, not the 1993 version)
Short Cuts - Robert Altman
Naked - Mike Leigh
Blue Velvet - David Lynch
Mulholland Drive - David Lynch
Three Colours Trilogy (Red White and Blue) - Krzysztof Kieslowski
Solaris - Andre Tarkovsky
Stalker - Andre Tarkovsky
The Seventh Seal - Ingmar Bergman
La Jetee - Chris Marker (a short art film later remade as '12 Monkeys by Terry Gilliam which you may also like, but this a is far superior and spookier film)
and if you want a hillarious critique of the Hollywood machine then watch....
The Player - Robert Altman
followed by George Sluizers own terrible remake of 'The Vanishing' (after watching the original first of course)

'The Adventures Of Sebastian Cole' is an excellent think-piece!
A movie with a very simular storyline to Butterfly Effect is Hollywood's version of Ray Bradbury's A Sound Of Thunder... just be prepared that the movie was not directed very well and the elaborate special effects, look costly, but also look thrown together without much thought...

You want a good movie where you really have to pay attention and will probably have to watch it twice?
1. Memento: an incredible movie that moves backwards. As confusing as that sounds you have to see it to believe it. Really amazing stuff.
2. The Usual Suspects: I love this movie simply because the second time you watch it, it is a completely different movie from the first time. After you know how it ends, it is impossible to see it again in the same light. Superb viewing.
