If you are running a 41 tooth sprocket and the bike feels underpowered, it is time for a change. If you are going to take the thing apart anyway, you may as well do it right. Get a new chain and two new sprockets. Use the same size for the back and to give it more acceleration (but actually lower the top speed...its a trade-off) use a bigger sprocket in the front. Chains and sprockets wear-in together. An old chain will wear out your new sprocket faster. An old sprocket will wear out a new chain faster.
Replacing the chain and both sprockets at once means that you won't have to worry about it for a long time.
