I think it depends on what culture you're in. In a caste system, the group you're in would influence your sense of identity. In the US, things like what you do, how much you make, your education level and how you look (thin vs. fat, stylish vs. frumpy, etc.) would influence ones sense of identity. While it shouldn't, our culture places value on these things and it's hard to avoid letting it impact ones own personal sense of self.

i'm ethnic chinese but am citizen to malaysia. so there is the influence of ethnicity and the influence of nationality. though generally i'm more affected by pop culture. ;)
