you have first to understand it and then writing it on your own words without looking to the original paragraph..

***** The first word in your sentence of "existed" is redundant because all civilizations have existed in various times of history. There is no need to use that word. Hope this helps..I used to edit a college newspaper among other duties .
To finish your last sentence you can add :
in various degrees.
Then your next paragraph you can exemplify different civilizations for eg. :
The Egyptians built pyramids....or The Greeks were the forerunners of outdoor theaters and stadiums..The Russians were original in their ornate architectural designs....
Patti's example of her sentence would not be good because she used a comma after "man",that would imply that your are comparing "man" to something else which you are not. "Man" is the subject and main topic of your paragraph,not a comparative subject.
