It is a sac/bag of fluid.

What fluid it contains is dependant on where the cyst is.

If you were to pop a cyst the chances are that the hole that you caused will heal and then the cyst will refill again from its source.

To treat a cyst it must be completely excised....you must take away the sac/bag that holds the fluid.

Most cysts will get bigger and bigger some are not serious some are..depending on where they are...and what is going to get squashed as they get bigger and what nerves get stretched as to the amount of pain you might experience..for instance in the brain, if a cyst is allowed to get too big this will press on the brain causing neurological problems and headaches, an ovarian cyst will usually cause pain. A breast cyst usually no pain just a lump.

A cyst is a closed sac having a distinct membrane and developing abnormally in a cavity or structure of the body. Cysts may occur as a result of a developmental error in the embryo during pregnancy, or they may be caused by infections. However, sometimes they arise spontaneously with no apparent cause. Cysts are often dangerous as they may have negative effects (for instance, compression) on the nearby tissue. They may contain air, fluids, or semi-solid material. A collection of pus is called an abcess, not a cyst.
