Most nations celebrate holidays that promote nationalism, as opposed to religious or family-oriented holidays.

If the nation revolted against a monarchy, or had to overcome some other adversity to establish their sovereignty, they will most likely celebrate an Independence Day.

If a nation was discovered, they will most likely celebrate a "Founder's Day." Columbus Day is America's "Founder's Day."
