Hi
Chickens, ducks and Geese do not have the same ability to swallow food or water as we do.. they need gravity

So they tip heads back to let gravity do its magic.

They also have a small bag like pouch called a crop that holds food before it moves into the stomach or gizard...

Hope that helps
Wismom

Chickens don't swallow things like humans or other mammals would do - the majority of birds don't. They take the water in their beak and lift their head up to make the water go down their throat. That's just how they drink!

By lifting their head in that manner it allows the water to run down their throat.
