M.A.T. Master of Arts in Teaching, is usually a degree in a specific field, with some courses from the Education Dept of the college. Like, MAT in Biology, or English. So, you would get a Bachelor's degree in English, and then take some graduate courses in English and also some courses in the Dept of Education. For the Master of Education M.Ed. all the courses would be about education, and be taught in the department of Education. In most states you get a temporary license to teach when you have completed your Bachelor's degree and had a few courses in education and some on the job training as a student teacher, but then, to keep your license you need to complete a Masters degree within a certain time - maybe five years.... if not, you lose your job.
