Because newton's laws do not take into consideration any type of friction and any calculation done where you have not eliminated friction will not be accurate.

eventually friction will stop whatever object is traveling in that direction. now in space, there is zero gravity so therefore, if you threw a rock in space it will only change direction unless it is hit by something else (eg the wall of the space shuttle)
