I applied for a county position which requires a bachelor's degree. I need to take one more class to fulfill it but I have my final interview next month. Will they investigate to see if I have my degree, will they deny me because I still have one class left? Thanks in advance! =)

Just tell the truth! Why is that so hard for people these days? Communicate and explain. Sure...they can check. Give them the information to check on you with so they will see that you will have your degree after this final class. Employers want honest people working for them. Don't sugar coat anything. Your degree is something to be proud of! Don't try to cover anything up...show your excitement to be finally getting your degree. Let them know that you are looking forward to the opportunity to be able to use it and gain experience with their company. There is no one out there that doesn't have respect for that.

Usually when a interviewer decides to do a background check, it includes criminal and it might also include educational (which involves the employer calling the college/educational institution). Never, EVER lie about education or job experience on a resume. If you get caught (even once you are hired) you can lose out on a great position (and yes, if they find out that you lied after they hire you, they can let you go for that). Be honest about the fact that you have one more class and you will save yourself a lot of heartache.

A background check probably wouldn't show school status - background checks are more for criminal records, and sometimes credit check. But for jobs requiring a degree, it's very common for the employer to ask for a transcript. If you are offered and accept the job, then are asked for a transcript, you'll have a real problem. So tell them now that you have one more course and when you'll be done. They might well be OK with that, but if you lie to them, they're probably not going to be, and would likely withdraw the offer or fire you.

Background checks are normally criminal checks.I'm surprised if it an entry level position that you have not been asked for a transcript from a university. I think if you are going to complete the degree in December, you may be okay, in May less okay, and if you just plan to "sometime" complete the degree, they might find out. I'd be careful though because false representation is normally grounds for immediate dismissal.

Did you lie on your resume or application? If you lied, you're a goner. If you said you have one more class to complete your degree, then it's okay.

It's entirely discretionary as to whether a prospective employer sees a bachelor's degree as a "must have" nor not.

Life experience is what counts for many employers.

I just applied for a job requiring me to take two exams before they'd even meet with me. Critical thinking and math were the two exams.

I think it's a brilliant idea to be sure to check up on prospective employees.

I work for a large organization who has never before paid much attention to checking on people's background and we are going to court in November because one woman - who we now know was previously convicted of theft/embezzlement from her former employer because she stole almost $500,000.00 from my employer.

Be straight with them and I think one class will not disqualify you.

A background check doesn't usually check your education. In your situation, the key is whether you told them honestly about your degree situation. If you told them you have one class left and they accepted that, you have no problem. If you told them you have a bachelor degree when in fact you don't, they can always not hire you or fire you later when they find out.

I am pretty sure that the college or university you attended cannot, by law, provide that information to your prospective employer, nor answer any other questions about your current or former status as a student. If they have not (or do not in the near future) ask for you to arrange for copies of your transcripts to be forwarded to them, you should be OK. I would, however, get on top of finishing up that degree, because it could, somehow come back to bite you later!

If you are not honest on your resume they can deny you the job, and if you are hired and they find out later it can mean immediate termination. Let them know at the interview that ou have one class left and give them a timeline on when you plan on completing your degree.

Background checks only verify the information you give the employer on the application.

Put down that you will receive your BA in 01/07.
Explain in your interview that you are finishing school.

I would be forthright with them about the fact that you have only one more class to take. They may not hold that against you being that close. But you do not want them to find out from someone else, or you may have burned the bridge on that opportunity forever...
