Just be like "Hey I'm having a little get together with a few of my friends please come!" Just don't invite anybody he may like!

Why don't you cut through all the games and junk? Call him and tell him you find yourself thinking about him more and more. Let him know that where you are not sure of your feelings about him yet...you would like to talk with him some more and get to know him a little better. Invite him over for a drink or do something non-threatening like take the dog for a walk. Tell him the truth..."your not good at this sort of thing (because your NOT) and that you figured the best thing to do would be to grow up and handle things more directly. Guys really do appreciate that>>>>AND...like the fact that a woman is direct / making things easier on them. This will help you as well whether they are receptive or not interested in getting on with things. Rejection at this point is only a pin prick. It will hurt a lot more later if you string things along and don't know where you stand. You can find out instead and move on. OR, you may find out that he has been fretting over the same thing and it is a mutually acceptable deal. Again...removing the gaming muck and getting on with things. Have confidence and go for it!

wouldn't that be a little awkward. your crush at your house? Plus he would figure out you like him in about 2 seconds, but if that's what you want I would go for the schoolwork thing.
