The cause: added greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane [natural gas], nitrous oxide [laughing gas] and others) make the atmosphere more opaque to infrared radiation; heat has a harder time getting out.
The effect: the Sun still adds roughly the same amount of heat to Earth, so Earth's temperature rises until the heat escapes at the same rate again.
How much the Earth's temperature rises each year: Unfortunately, the year-to-year variations from other cycles are far greater than the warming trend.

How about a disease with high fever? cause: a germ, bacteria; effect: white blood cells multiply to fight it, resulting in high fever. Research it more, of course.
