From what I've read, I'd say the large majority of Americans felt that they were safe and had few, if any, worries about their getting involved in the conflicts going on.

By December 1941, on the eve of the Pearl Harbor attack, most Americans were fearful that there would be war with Germany, but thought the Japanese would back down.

My experience is that Yanks have a particularly poor grasp of geography and therefore, as Hawaii was not part of the US at this point I imagine most of them felt nothing but a smug sense of security.
