i have an older pc that i would like to set up just to playolder version pc games like mechcommander. the pc has win xp pro on it right now as the windows system, and i would like to put win 98 on it. but right now it wount even run xp! when i start the pc i get a blue sceen that says "unmountable_boot_volume". and the pc wont do anything. not even in safe mode. how to i get past this message so my pc will run? thanx for any help guy! have a great weekend!

The message means the boot.ini file in XP is corrupted. If you want to get rid of the XP installation it won't be a problem.
Your best option will be, as the first answer advised, to reformat the hard drive. Download Killdisk, link below, it's free and fits on a floppy or CD. Once you've used that you can install W98.

The first thing you should try is a repair install. You simply have to boot your computer with the Windows XP installation CD and choose repair in the options.

If that fails, you will have to verify the options in your BIOS are correct. This depends on your BIOS version and your hard drive model, if you need more assistance they will be needed.

Otherwise trying a different hard drive and/or data cable could get you through.

1. Format with a Win98/Me Startup disk.
2. Use a Windows 98/Me startup disk to delete the non-dos partition.
3. Boot from Startup Disk.
4. Load FDISK by typing "fdisk" at the "A" prompt without the quotes.
5. Say yes to large disk support ...........? [Y] ENTER
6. Enter choice #3 to "Delete partition or Logical Dos Drive" Press ESC to
return to FDISK options
7. Enter #4 to "Delete Non-DOS Partition". Select the Non-DOS partition by
typing the number and then ENTER. Press ESC to return to FDISK options.
Note you cannot delete a NON-DOS partition located inside an Extended
partition.
8. Reboot with startup disk and load FDISK.
9. Say yes to Large disk support as above.
10. Enter choice #1 Press ESC to return to FDISK options
11. When asked if you want to use the maximum size for the partition and make it
active, type Y if you want to use the whole drive, or N if you want to set a
maximum sized for the partition.
12. After setting the size, reboot.


at the A: prompt type :- format /c: ,press enter
after format.
it will return to the A: prompt then type in E:(which is your cd rom .
at E: prompt type setup /c: , press enter
follow on screen instruction , but with in an hour you will have windows

to do what u want to do, you need to reformat your hard drive ,create a partition an ALWAYS mount the older windows version 1st

Replace the harddrive. or start by checking the ribbon cables.
