Doesn't the fact that so many people opt for death themselves give us a clue about how perverse the human condition can be?
The fact is that we would often prefer to die than live having lost a loved one. That eventuality hurts us deep, deep inside. It terrifies us more than death ever can. Those of us who have lost people we love know this. Those who have yet to experience it can imagine how it feels.
So we pass the buck to the survivors. In opting for death we remove the cross from our own shoulders, and we place it on theirs. In running from the pain, we leave them in pain. In sparing ourselves we only punish them.
So no, not necessarily.
I might not be so cruel as to surrender my own life for theirs.
It could happen that I might love somebody too much to do that to them...

Yes. Sometimes I feel like I already am - but it is a slower process, since it is just an illness, and I am 'spending' my life taking care of her.
Gone is gone, no matter how you do it.
