Teach them that it is within their power to heal a bad situation, and make a change when things arent going their way by believeing in themselves, working hard and doing all they can to preserve good relationships with other people. Make sure that they know that what they are dealt may not be up to them, but they have the power to make things better as long as they work hard and show kindness patience and respect to others who might someday be there to return the favor. This will give them an internal locus of control and the ability to network friends and other people: a balance of independance and cooperation which will be essential to getting them through adulthood.

Other than normal up bringing, the best time to teach youre child is the time they are born to the time they reach 5 years of age....it's all over after that. Their personaility is developed and ready to be the best they can be and you teach them well then, and you will reap it now!

teach them to show respect
teach them how to say the word no to drugs liquor and sex in t
he early years of their life. And try to get them to understand that they can come to you to talk to you about anything with out getting into trouble. Something my dad always told me was if I should ever do any drinking (even though they said not to) was to call them for a ride no matter what and I would not get into trouble. Because my life ment more to them then anything else.

Some of the other answers are very good. My take is a bit different though.

I think they need to know the difference between right and wrong. They also need to know that no matter what, there is nothing they can't talk to me about. I can't help if I don't know. And finally that they are loved!

And we as parents need to re-enforce it all the time....

just because somebody has different colored skin DOESNT mean they are any different then the rest of the world; people come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
just because they dont understand something about other cultures, they dont need to discriminate, or make fun of something they do not understand. PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE NO MATTER WHAT and they still have feelings like everybody else

To treat everyone like they are a human being and the way you wish to be treated. I think too many children are bullied and made fun of for being different and this needs to stop.

Honesty and communication. To be nice to everyone, not to beat on the little people in their classes.

They'd be on the road to a happy life, and if everyone was like that...happy society.

But that probably won't happen for a long time. If ever. ;_;
