I have two questions. One, If you knit 5 feet on 15 mm needles, or size 19 us, how many feet or inches would it be on other needles such as size 8 US. Second, how many feet long is good for a scarf?

First, the easy question. A good rule of thumb is to make a scarf as long as the person is tall. For a child, make it a little longer so they can wear it for a few seasons.

How long a scarf would be using size 19 needles vs. size 8 needles depends on the stitch pattern, the yarn, and the width of the scarf, the type of knitting needle you're using, and the knitter.

If you really want to know, you can figure it out by knitting a swatch using each needle size. Measure the # of rows per inch and # of stitches per inch for each. With that, you'll know the ratio of size 8 sts to the size of size 19 sts. For example, it might be 2:3 rows, and 1:2 stitches. Multiply the length & width of the scarf by those ratios and you'll have an approximate size of the scarf knit on the smaller needles.

Five feet is still five feet no matter what needles you use. The thicker the needle, the thicker the stitch. One foot longer than your height would be ideal, that allows for a wrap or two around your neck, then down to your midriff. Doctor Who's scarf was about fifteen feet long.....................
