The Old Testament or the Hebrew Scriptures (also called the Hebrew Bible) constitutes the first major part of the Bible used by Christians. It is usually divided into the categories of law, history, poetry (or wisdom books) and prophecy. All of these books were written before the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, who is the subject of the subsequent Christian New Testament. The Bible used by Jesus is the Old Testament, specifically according to Luke 24:44-49: "written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms ... the scriptures". According to historians, the Old Testament was composed between the 5th century BC and the 2nd century BC, though parts of it, such as the Torah, and Song of Deborah (Judges 5), date back much earlier.
The New Testament (Καινή Διαθήκη), sometimes called the Greek Testament or Greek Scriptures, and sometimes also New Covenant which is the literal translation of the Greek, is the name given to the final portion of the Bible, the holy book of the Christians. It was written by various authors after c. 45 AD and before c. 140 AD. Its books were gradually collected into a single volume over a period of several centuries. The New Testament is more or less the root of the Christian religion, which has played a major role in shaping modern Western morality and culture.

Old Testament refers to the body of the Bible that took place before Christ was born. The New Testament is the savior on earth.
There are some people that discount the Old Testament, saying that the New replaced it, not true at all. All of the Bible is relevant and works together, not as separate entities.

The Old Testament of the bible is basically a book of laws and rules for the people in the times before Jesus' birth. It includes different praises to God and stories about the different family lines and occurances of the time.
The New Testament is written about what Jesus spoke to the people and miracles he performed. Some laws are revised in the New Testament in order to keep up with the times and a few new concepts and ideas are brought into Christianity.

Old Testament is Jewish (Hebrew) history, from the creation of the world, through Moses, and through the various wandering of the Jews to find God, the Messiah, and a land to live in.
After that, is the New Testament, which is the story of one Jew, Jesus, and his message, and a bunch of letters of St. Paul, trying to explain this Jesus (Christ) figure.
Most of the Bible is the Old Testament, by sheer volume.
Christian tack the New Testament on top of the Old testament, for continuity, since Jesus was a Hebrew and arose out of that tradition, although varying from it--even rebelling against it, which got him executed.
The Jews do not accept Jesus as the promised Messiah, which is their right to do.
Christians think that Jesus was the ultimate fulfillment of the Hebrew struggles.
Then there are the Islamic folks, who think that both Moses and Jesus were minor preliminaries to Mohammed, who they believe takes newest and top priority. ( They use the Quran, or Koran, as their sacred text.)

The Catholic Bible has the historic Books, like Samuel, Kings, etc., which at the instant are not discovered in the Tanahk. the only different genuine distinction is that some might argue that lots replaced into misplaced in translation from Hebrew, to Greek, to Latin, and at last to different languages. this is why the historic Books at the instant are not secure in the Tanakh, using fact they have been initially written in Greek.

The term old and new testament are christian terms. The old pertains to the covenant and promise God made with Abraham and the Mosaic Law. The new pertains to the fulfillment of the covenant and promise--the unfolding of a new era for the human race.
