XP Professional can act as a router if IP Forwarding is enabled:

Since Windows 2000 - Windows XP is built on top of BSD code (according to rumor) - you can use a XP professional machine as a router as long as you have 2 network cards as well.

Debian LINUX makes for good routers - we used them (with ipchains and iptables) where I worked at.

You can yum the config actually. If the machine is a dedicated router I suggest going to distrowatch and using a distro dedicated to being a router.

The configuration is different depending on what you are doing. Sounds like you want to do a bridge between a wan and lan. You probably want to do NAT (network address translation) on your lan side.

Don't even attempt to use windoze as a router. You are much better off using hardware instead. Most windoze versions are incapable of being a router.

The article below is a very good one on using Linux as a bridge.

If you're connecting 2 LANs, you only need one router.

You can't use XP as a router, you need a server OS to do that.

You can use Linux as a router, but I can't help you with that.
