There is a huge demand for tutors--primarily in reading and math. I would think you should be at least 13-14 before anyone would hire you as a serious tutor, & then it would be for younger children.

Contact the grade school you attended, tell them you are an alumni, describe your qualifications, & ask if they would distribute a flyer for you. You could get lucky & if they have an after school program they might let you come in & tutor there (especially if you went to a Catholic school). If not, hang flyers (with cut tear offs on the bottom with your phone #). on the telephone poles near where parents pick up their children. If you have a mall near you, you could put flyers on windshields.

If you are a little older & have already taken the SAT & scored well, that is another area where services are always demanded. In that instance you should ask at the high school where you attended if you can post a flyer.

Typically tutors charge by the hour, but for specialized or college level tutoring I know a tutor that charges in 15 min. increments because the hourly charge is $75.

My advice is if you want to become a tutor is to either go to a sylvan learning center if you are a certified teacher. If not I would say that math is in high demand as well as reading. Pay depends on the area you live in. Advertising, I would place an ad in the paper, at grocery stores, or at schools if that is allowed.
