Yeh, the free game passes just have a serial code or number on them, which pretty much allows you to install the game.
Downsides- I think you cannot open trade windows with other players, thus buying or selling items or enchants, so on and so forth. No mail either, i think.
But if you know some1 playing WoW and you want to start, talk to them and they can hook you up, if they do they get a free month of playing, or something like that =)

No, it isnt a scam, every player gets 5 free references to give to people for a 14 day trial. You can but it at walmart for 2.99(just for the cd) but why not cash in on this. I dont need one, just reasuring her. BTW most people will probly not believe/care too much about if your a girl or not as most of the female characters in the game are guys.
