The dye industry is widespread throughout Southeast Asia and India, so I would say probably millions. Roughly 15% do solid dyes, 25% do patterns, and the rest make tie-dye tee shirts for Greatful Dead fans.

Most of the dyeing occurs in India and China. Much of the raw materials, cotton, silk, chemicals can be found there. In India, much of it is done outdoors in big vats of dye. There will be many thousands of people working in this industry.

I suppose it depends on the day of the week. Maybe the don't work Sundays and no dyeing happens.
