according to what i have read about opals the only opal that is of ill omen is the black opal cause generally speaking the black opal signifies death or dying in most legends the ones i was reading go back before the middle ages.

The legend says the opal is only lucky for those whose birth stone is opal. Others should not wear one.

My aunt (whose birthstone was opal) always used to say that it is bad luck for anyone to wear an opal if wasn't their birthstone. Silly superstition - they are truly beautiful.
