I always used to put a dvd/video on that I had seen loads of times just have it on very low volume (or if you have cable tv or sky then tune into a music channel), I'm assuming you have a tv set that you can programme to switch itself off after a certain length of time, I never remembered seeing the end of the video/dvd.!!
Sweet dreams.

EDIT
I would iust like to add.
Harry D. If you were taken really ill during the night and had to phone for an ambulance to take you to hospital, remember the t**ts who will take care of you!!

Hey beggs, I have felt your pain. I worked night shift for 3 years. I am a single mom too, that meant that I NEVER got 8 hours all at once. I trained myself to sleep in the noisy day time, while everyone else is mowing the lawn, cutting down trees, remodeling their home....on and on ...and the stupid PHONE calling all day yadda, yadda. First thing I did was to put foil over the windows! That darkened my room enough to make sleep seem a little easier. Next, I also used earplugs, but I also had a fan running for white noise...All the Time. Next, over the ear plugs (and this is where I messed up) I used ear phones with a portable cd player, where I put in thunderstorm music. I slept like a baby for as long as I could. I had to get up at 3 for time with my son after school and to help him with his home work and other school related stuff. I would then take him to my mom's and go back home to try to sleep for a couple of hours before getting up at 10 to be to work at midnight. I had an hour commute to get to work as well. I have since transferred into another job and work days again. The problem is that I conditioned myself so well with the sleeping to the thunderstorms, that now I about fall asleep at my desk every time we have rain!!! I have always been a light sleeper and lived sleep deprived for the time that I worked graveyard shift. I hope my hints help, or at least give you some hope for sleeping better in the day. I wish you the best of luck, beggs, and hope you find peace. Nana

First off, get room darkener curtains, or put a blanket or sheet up over your window to trick your body into thinking that it's night. Try also taking a shower or bath with a lavendar bath product, that is said to have relaxing properties. I would also try a nature sounds cd, or turning your tv on very low. In time you will get used to sleeping during the day. I would also turn off phone ringers. Those are so disruptive.

Thick thick curtains that cut out all light. Cotton-wool in the ears helps block out noise without causing you to listen to your own breathing like earplugs do. If you don't want to take sleeping-pills you can try something mild like nightnurse or a sedating antihistamine like piriton, which you can get over the counter.

My fella works nights - we have blackout curtains which are great. for him - he is in bed by 7 and up by 1.30

I used to work nights and sometimes I would have to sit up for an hour or so to wind down - treat it like a late shift... go to bed around 8 in the morning after a glass of wine? or beer? and get up by 2.

I never slept the first day of my nights either - which made it easier to sleep. Yet my fella goes to the gym - has a big lunch and goes to bed for a couple of hours before his first nightshift!

My dad would stay up til around 3 pm and go to bed, then get up at about 8pm for his nights.

It's what suits you really. Find your routine and stick to it.

Get better earplugs....the squashy shaped ones, not the straight sided foam things. An eye-mask works great for me, or get good black-out blinds/curtains.
If you're struggling to get to sleep, don't think about trying to sleep.....lie there and think about staying awake.....you'll soon drop off!!!
