why do alot of people who ride motorcycles forget to put mufflers on them?

a lot of times when im driving, a motercycle will go by me and it will be deafingly loud. i was wondering why they dont just put a muffler on their bikes.are the mufflers very expensive? is that why?

It's because they want attention. They want people to notice them, even if the only way they can do it is by annoying the s*** out of everyone else.

Two reasons:
1. Its part of the culture...if you don't ride you don't get it.
2. Its a safety issue...if you've ridden before you know what its like to have some dork almost side swipe you because they don't know you're there. If the bike is loud enought most people with a brain the size of a hamster and decent hearing will know to look twice before they change lanes or turn left in front of you because they can hear that a bike is close by.

By the way a muffler for a bike can run anywhere between $250 to $2500.

Stock motorcycles come with mufflers on them so it isn't that they forgot to put a muffler on, they had to modify them on purpose. Chance are they still have a muffler, just a high performance one. High performance mufflers are less restrictive which is generally louder. Many riders think loud pipes are cool, but most of them mainly want the extra performance.
Another thing that makes motorcycles louder than cars is that their engines tend to have a much larger powerband. Many motorcycles don't redline until over 10,000 RPM. With the engine revving that high, it doesn't matter what muffler you have on, it'll be loud.

The argument has and always will be that Loud pipes saves lives Which in my opinion is a invalid argument because if it were true then how come people get killed by trains they are LOUD,all loud pipes do is tick off the people that you are riding next to or the people in the neighborhood. The reason a HORN is required is to let Cagers know you are there. By the Way I RIDE and I still don't get it

People shouldn't rely on sound to be noticed for safety because it won't help. If you don't consider yourself invisible to other motorist and don't expect other motorists to just not see or hear even when you can see they are looking in your direction you are putting yourself in serious danger. You can never expect people to avoid hitting you instead you have to avoid them just as if you are walking instead of riding even if it means giving them the right of way when it should be yours. Most all accidents that wasn't the bikers fault at all still could have been avoided by the rider if they were just expecting it to happen. If you think that the loud pipes are cool, I don't care who you are your immature. Loud pipes are for the race track not public streets.

No they take off the mufflers by purpose because they get more power on their bike. And some people are even so crazy that they want every-bodies attention so they make their bike sound deafeningly loud.

i used to hate the sound of loud pipes. now i think that they sound kinda cool. but they can get to be too much if i hear it all of the time.
some say it is for safety and then they ride without a helmet or after they have had a few beers.
i think that loud pipes should be considered another form of pollution. (noise pollution)
