Actually, In the comics (and movie) Peter lives with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben who live in a fairly nice area but in both mediums are not making enough money to live there. In later comics May opens her house to borders and eventually has to sell it.... Plus Pete's parents were "retro-conned" to have worked for the CIA. Origionally there was very little explained about exactly who they worked for and what they did.
...Unless you are talking about "Ultimate Spider-man" which doesn't really follow any of the rules.....

The comic books went back and forth over this.
First, he was orphaned at a young age and didn't really remember his parents, so they were pretty much irrelevant.
Generally, he was raised middle-middle class by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May.
After Ben was killed, Aunt May had trouble making ends meet. She took in boarders, and eventually rented out the house and moved in with Mrs. Watson. Because of her never-ending health problems, she was usually short of cash for medicine, and Peter Parker chipped in, at one point selling his motorcycle. Later, Peter interrupted his grad school to be a photographer full time. Peter was a perpetually broke student.
Their fortunes changed after Peter married Mary Jane Watson. She had a good income from modeling, and later, steady work as an actress. Peter sold a book of his photographs. The Parkers were well-to-do.
That brings us up to abouf five years ago. Don't ask me what the situation is now; I don't know.

Well, when the story starts, he's already living with his Aunt and Uncle, and regardless of where they are living at the time, they are seemingly portrayed as an average income family....whether or not that means UPPER middle class, it doesn't seem that way.
Of course, in the movies, to make Uncle Ben and Aunt May more sympathetic to the audience and an additional stress point for Peter, they made them appear to barely get by.

I think that is an accurate assumption. I mean he was even in college when he got bitten, so barring any scholarships some one was forking over some dough. Uncle Ben was a retiree and we dont know if he had a pension coming in or not. So yes I would say upper middle class

In the movie, he was from a poor family. Just his mother or grandmother and either an uncle or a grandfather. They lived in a row house and did not seem to be rich at all.

When a family is put in the class system, they are whichever class society deems fit for them to be.
