I was thinking about using a play yard , with built in bassinet, for early on.
Do you think this is safe to allow baby to sleep for the first few months?
It would be so much cheaper then buying a craddle or bassinet and a play yard.
But primarely, this is my last. And I dont want to spend that much money.
I just wonder if it is safe?

DO NOT listen to the first answer. You are not supposed to put your baby on its stomach to sleep, this increases the chances of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) The baby, being on its stomach can inhale more carbon monoxide. You are ONLY supposed to allow your baby to sleep on their stomachs IF they are able to roll from stomach to back on their own, this way if they need to roll over to their back for some reason (can breath etc) they can do so on their own. To prevent your child from developing a "flat head" you can move their position in the basinette and/or crib every day so they look different ways, also moving a mobile to different places around a crib as well as lots and lots of tummy time.

You should be fine using the basinette provided by the play yard. Be sure to check weight restrictions so you know how long your child can sleep in the basinette, this weight restriction will be different then the weight restriction for the actual play yard.

My daughter has always slept in a play yard (we call it a Pack-N-Play). For the first few months, she slept either in a bassinet by our bed or in the bassinet part that is built into the Pack-N-Play. She's now 21 months and no longer uses the bassinet part. I really like it and when we travel she's used to sleeping in it already, so that's an added bonus. I do have extra padding on the bottom since our Pack-N-Play kind of has a hard bottom to it.

By the way, I agree with Candace - DO NOT listen to that first answer. Newborn babies should ALWAYS be put to sleep on their backs. "BACK to sleep".

Were you asking if it was safe to allow baby to sleep with you for the first few months? If that was the question, then if you have no other resources, you do what you must! However, you may lose sleep worrying whether you are going to roll over on baby and suffocate or hurt in some way. There must be second hand stores in your area where you could buy a crib for a reasonable price. There are also, I am sure, of charities or groups that could loan you a crib and help you acquire one. Yard sales, flea markets, church sales are all good resources! Maybe a friend or family member has one they could lend you. Check on line! There are numerous resources for you to turn to, get out the telephone book and newspaper and start looking. Babies have slept with parents right from start but I wouldn't advise it as I have said you will lose much needed sleep and cause yourself extra worry and stress. Also you are setting your self up for problems when you do want the child to sleep in their own bed and room. Good luck

We bought a bassinet for our son and never used it. We put him in his crib from the beginning in his own room.....which worked out in our favor later on. If you want to use a play yard go ahead that's what the built in bassinet is for. Just make sure there are no safety recalls on it. You'll make the right choice.

Sure, why not? As long as the baby is not exposed to a plastic pad underneath! I've known of alot of people who don't have alot of money to spend, and use the playpen for a bed too.

I used one after my third child:) just get more-padding and place it under the cushion that the pack-in-play has:) that way no worries of suffocation will enter your worried mind:) And your baby will be comfy...its a great non expensive approach! We got rid of everything after our third... good luck!

Well, i dont know about your question,
but heres a tip.

let your baby sleep on its stomach,
if he/she sleeps on its back for a while its head deforms, so it shapes better if you make your baby sleep on its stomach.

just letting you know.
dont believe me, go research a medical journal about this matter. .

peace.
