you hit the ball usually into the outfield where the fielder can't get to it too fast, and start to run to first base.
if the fielder doesn't have control of the ball yet you head onto second base, all the while watching the coaches because they can see a lot more than you since your running for dear life.
keep running until you slide into third base before the outfielder throws the ball to the third baseman.
