Are these scrapes right on the point of the hock? if so, you dont need to worry to much, because he's probably got them from lying down, if, however the hocks begin to swell, then there mayb be an infection.
the biggest indication of a joint injury is if the wounds are deep, and the fluid coming out of them is clearish. Clear fluid is a BAD thing, coz it means that the wound goes right into the joint proper and joint fluid (the clear stuff) is coming out. In this case, DO NOT clean the wound with ANYTHING other than water, and phone your vet immediately!!!
However, what you are describing here doesnt sound to serious, just clean the injuries thoroughly and apply an antideptic spray or cream to dry the scrapes out.

Hope this help!!!!

For the past ten years my horse has had small abrasions on the outsides of his hocks from lying down. They are about the size of a dime to quarters at times and they bleed also from time to time. I heal them, then they happen AGAIN and AGAIN. Are they on both hocks in about the same spot?? I tried using Zinc, the white goo. Worked the best on my horse. But nothing will heal them quickly or forever. Good Luck if that's what it is. Its a minor but unsightly problem.

I agree with Kismet, it sounds like something your horse got from laying down. If he got himself cast and got out of it himself the struggle may have caused the scrapes. I have also known horses who stood with their hind end too close to the wall, and everytime they shifted their weight from one hind leg to the other they were banging their hocks on the wall.

If you have some iodine scrub or some nolvasan scrub wash the scrapes. Put some nolvasan cream or furox spray on them. Keep an eye on them, and if the hocks blow up call the vet.

If they are really deep, or you see any type of puncture, call the vet.

Good luck!

is he uncomfortable??? That is the best way to tell. Try just keeping the area clean. Contact your vet's office for advise if you are really worried. But chill, you are of no help to your horse if you are spazzed-out!

IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY FOR A HORSE. THEN YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY A VET.
