It wouldn't matter that they knew there were 3. They just needed to know there was more than just itself. That way, when the farmer's wife was chasing them, it knew it just had to outrun the one behind it.

well to be serious mice already have bad eyesight so I'm sure they could figure it out from brushing their whiskers against each other
