lately i've been receiving calls on my cellphone at night. he's using a private number and leaves messages in my voicemailbox. i would like to call him back to ask him what's wrong with this guy.

First browse through the list of calls made and record the time intervals between calls. If the gap is more than 1 minute then the numbers are stored on your address book, if it is enabled.
Connect your cellphone to a pc and use Task Manager to auto-reply a call at a certain time when you are sure that "He" would call
As soon as there is a call on your cellphone the TM would autoreply whatever that you have recorded as your reply message for the CALLER

You can't really see the ID of a private call. That's why it's called Private. They may have bought something to mask their identity. Like *67'ed you.

Turn the phone off at night or do not answer. Just delete the message. Hey, it costing him to call, even, if, just time to do it.
