it is a term started by the govt labeling young people with radical ideas in the 60's typiclly long unkept hair, psycadelic clothes,peace signs and sex drugs an rock n roll were associated with it. but anyone can be a hippy at heart

You have to be an idiot for one. Being lazy helps very much. Then just espouse a cause that doesn't really matter at all. Weed, and bad guitar playing is also a hippie staple.
