I'm not complaining, just curious, after staying in a hotel in Andover recently where all the staff were from other countries - mostly Portugal, I'd guess. They were perfectly competent, charming and helpful, but I did wonder why local young people were not used. What benefits do hoteliers gain by employing youngsters from other countries?

You are all saying 'cheap', but don't they have to be paid the same minimum wage as UK citizens? Or is there a loophole?

Usually because they're prepared to work longer hours for lower pay than anyone else.
They're also far less likely to complain or take legal action because they don't generally realise that they have rights.
Some of them may not be legally able to work in the UK as well. and that always makes an easy target for unscrupulous employers.

Even so, most are very happy to be employed just so that they can send money back to families at home and probably earn more here than the same work pays in the home country.

The foreign staff that they employ aren't staying for more than a couple of years. They don't need to worry about saving to buy a house, start a career or support a family, so they can work a lot cheaper than someone local who has to worry about these things. I guess that the foreign staff have no entitlement to job seekers allowance etc either, so they pretty much have to work.

actually there are alot of foreign students that hav come to uk and they are given some working hour permit... now the best business that provides them flexi hours is pump or hotel. hence u see so many of them in the hotels and laater on they get accustomed to the job and keep it even after completing their study.

The wages are so poor that only people from countries with worse economies than ours think it is worth it!
