Fly life span is very short. they die very quickly. Only the eggs survives.
If flies would live a long time the world would be covered all arround the globe two stories high full of flies. Most of their life they serve as food for the birds.

Anywhere they can stay warm, or at least a little warmer. Inside the cracks and nooks of the siding of a house is probably prime territory. The heat from the house helps protect them as they lay dormant for the winter.

I can not tell you the temperature that they require for life, but I can tell you that when the temperature outside falls below those limitations, they don't go anywhere. They simply die.
