The Russians have a significant amount of influence with Europe and Central Asia, but the millionaires aren't really all that influential. The man with the power in Russia is Vladimir Putin. He was democratically elected, but since his election has consolidated government power in his own hands and tried to ensure his position for as long as possible.
Russian influence in Europe has a lot to do with with oil and natural gas. Russia supplies oil and natural gas to Western Europe, and has already shown a willingness to cut off those supplies when it is unhappy. However, while Europeans really want to keep the gas flowing, they're becoming more and more upset with Putin and his tactics. Russia is having a much more difficult time getting the agreements it wants. The Europeans would LIKE to get their oil and gas cheaply from Russia, but if Putin continues to piss them off, they'll get it somewhere else. And Russia needs European money more than Europeans need cheap gas.

Their government is 20 times more corrupt (than most other 3rd world countries)....they have an issue keeping some of their nuclear warheads (particulary land based ICBMS). They are in bed with a terrorist supporting nation-- Iran (construction projects, oil, etc), they are trying to wield bullying style influence over smaller nations (like Georgia and Ukraine). The government stifles free speech and free enterprise (Yukos and the reporter that wrote about torture in Russia...that was recently found dead...are examples).
So what do I think of Russia? Ever since the Communist Revolution...this nation has been nothing more than an empty regime filled with corruption, dictators, ignorant people and crime. True Russia has an enormous industrial base...true...Russia has an enormous supply of oil...but the country cannot finance itself due to the devaluation of the Ruple...and the country continues to put entrepreneurs in jail for trumped up charges...(Yukos comes to mind, once again).
We shouldn't have a reason to fear the nation---the Cold War is long overwith..and both nations aren't stupid to launch a preemptive strike on one another...but other nations that are close the country should fear this rather problematic "nation" and it's agressive policies.
