There are some kids with special powers and they are held in this lab area. they can make teddy bears do things with there minds. They are possibly being tested as wepons, they escape and something about a hot air ballon. I know very vague i read it many many years ago and i want to read it again. any ideas?

Could it have been James Patterson's "When the Wind Blows"...? If not, it at least sounds similar to the book you mention. Not typical James Patterson, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Best of lick to u! :-)
