49=4*10+9*1
49=4 times 10+9 times 1
49=4 tens+9 ones

YOU are correct your grandson is not. 9 is in the ones spot, and 4 is in the tens spot, If you had 149 the 1 would be in hundreds the spot and so on up; thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands and etc.
