you are right. The ones is 9 and the tens is 4. I remember learning that in math a couple years ago. Bye :)

49=40+9
49=4*10+9*1
49=4 times 10+9 times 1
49=4 tens+9 ones

4 * 10 = 40 (tens)
9 * 1 = 9 (ones)
40 + 9 = 49

YOU are correct your grandson is not. 9 is in the ones spot, and 4 is in the tens spot, If you had 149 the 1 would be in hundreds the spot and so on up; thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands and etc.
