Ok, so I have a 1998 chevy cavalier and it's an automatic. It's done this a few times, and it always scares the crap out of me because it acts likes it's stalling. It's almost always when I am braking, but the engine will shut off (or slowly peter out) but the lights and electric of the car stay on. I have no clue what the problem is... any ideas?

Sounds like a vacuum leak.

The problem is very likely in you're electronic eng. control sys. ie. the computer inputs-outputs & the comp. itself. There is one indicator in you're dash panel that is tied into this sys. It generally says ck. engine. If that light is on or comes on intermittentenly it further points to the E.E.C. system. Some of the parts stores are providing scanners to use in determining the cause of these types of problems or if you have a shop you trust you might ask them to scan it for you.

This sounds like a problem with your transaxle you will need to get a OB 2 reader to diagnose this type of problem.

i own a repair shop, and it might have a fuel pump going out on it,this is one of the warning signs they give when they start to go bad,it might be a good idea to have it checked out,and if it is going bad id get it replaced now ,id rather do that than have it go out and leave me stranded, good luck,i hope this help,s.
