A few years ago Yorkshire Arts advertised meetings for a black women writers group. Nobody turned a hair or thought of this as strange.
But what if someone started up a group for white women writers ?
Then what????
I wish to offend no-one by this question - I wouldn't willingly hurt anyone's feelings. But surely this kind of thing shouts loudly 'double standards'!

NB I do not know whether this particular group is still in existence, or still connected to Yorkshire Arts.

These groups are typically run where a certain demographic is under-represented. I think long-term, this sort of exercise is counterproductive, as it reinforces the ideas that these groups are "different", or less able as they need specialised support. If the writing topics they were focused on were to do with issues of racism and sexism, they may well have felt more comfortable expressing themselves in such a group, but again, I'd say that we shouldn't be stereotyping black women writers as a sort of modern-day flagellator of white males - they shouldn't be lined up to write incredibly dull but worthy stuff about how Racism Is Bad: they should be encouraged to take their talents wherever they lead them.

No. This is no different than a sci-fi or memoir writing group. There's a genre of black female pop fiction that started in the 1980's with Terry McMillion and is older than "white" chick lit (mid 1990s). You obviously spend all of your time reading classifieds and have never been to a bookstore.

I think that exclusive minority groups are, by their very nature, working against the principle of inclusiveness. And it smacks of double standards - equality would suggest that if one group can do something, then all groups should be able to. But suggest an all white/men/hetero group and the PC fanatics would soon be on your case.

there's a double universal here, yet its no longer in basic terms in politics. Its everywhere. Hypothetical: Alan (white male) applies to a college yet is denied because of the fact they have the desire to make room for extra blacks to attend - it truly is affirmative action. Tyrone (black male) applies to a college yet is denied because of the fact they have the desire to make room for extra whites to attend - it truly is racism and discrimination. does not make any experience to me. Now onto particularly what you're asking: politics. various human beings vote for a candidate for extremely stupid motives. a brilliant occasion of it truly is while somebody votes for a candidate because of the fact he's black or because of the fact she is a woman. There are different examples nevertheless: - balloting for a candidate because of the fact he's on the subject material of another nicely-accepted baby-kisser. E.g.: The Kennedys in Massachusetts, the Caseys in Pennsylvania, the timber, and so forth. - balloting for a candidate basically because of the fact he's out of your residing house state. Too many examples of this to show... - balloting for a candidate because of the fact he's nice-looking, wears a beneficial tie, or something comparable. it truly is previous stupid... besides, you get the factor...
