if you get both at a very young age they become best friends i know it sounds dead sickly but it's true , my nan's my auntie and my cousins pets have all had the same reaction. but i think a nice family dog is great for a first pet, like a golden retriver

I would say it depends how much time you have and whether you are around home a lot.

If you are out a lot during the day (at work etc) and away a lot at weekends, then a cat is probably the best pet for you because they are solitary creatures mainly, and it's easy to arrange a neighbour or friend to come in and feed them or buy one of the feeding trays that open at regular feeding times.

However, if you're home a lot, enjoy walks and have the time and energy, dogs are great companions. They're more difficult to arrange 'weekend cover' for though.

I've had both dogs and cats and there are downsides with both, but they are both very loving and a joy to have as pets.

Happy pet hunting!

PET RULES

To be posted VERY LOW on the refrigerator door - nose height.

Dear Dogs and Cats,

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.
The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years --canine or feline attendance is not required.

Dogs are by far the better 'pet' as they are loyal and committed to their owners and the lives people lead. Cats are fickle, as nice as they might be....eg they will go to anyone's house for food....and if it is a cold winter's day......and someone offers them some warmth elsewhere they will take it.....

That said......cats are by far the easier pet to look after...i.e. they look after themselves. If you work during the day you don't need to worry about them as they are independent. Dogs however need more attention, walking etc So for a working man cats are the way forward...

Wow, that's a good question!

I actually find it kind of hard to answer because I have both dogs and cats and I love both as companions.

I would say that Dogs are great pets because they're on our emotional level in many ways that cats are not (or maybe they are and they just don't want us to know)
Although both my cats and dogs understand my body language and tone of voice ( like saying "NO!") I find that my dogs are more responsive to my interacting and... when they're happy, they let you know it!
I also enjoy the energy that a dog brings to your life. I mean, if my cats could fetch Frisbee's... I'd be set! =) I think dogs show their emotions more so than cats... but that could also be another skill that cats have on dogs.

My kitties are special to me in many ways as well. For one, I don't have to put a leash on them to walk them (as mentioned in an answer above). They aren't physically demanding... they go in the litter when they want to, and my cats will let me know they want it cleaned... even if it's barely been used.

They're cheap to feed too! If you give a cat a can of wet food, he'll love you for life! They're "easy pleasers" I would say.
AND... great to snuggle with.
My cats enjoy interacting with me vocally (I call it chatterboxing) and with toys and such, so...

I say... buy a catdog (like the cartoon) lol and you'll have the best of both worlds! hehe

CATS ofcourse, what a silly question, there is no reason why anyone with the slightest bit of intelligence would feel the need to have a silly dog that can only do things when being told to do things... how stupid is that like. CATS on the other hand, sofistciated, independant and most of all BEAUTIFUL animals have the upper hand... enjoy

Dogs! I had a cat for many years, but after purchasing a dog I've never looked back. He's the only one that is always pleased to see me when I get home. 24/7 he's my shadow, protector and companion.

Dogs. Dogs are loving animals that always look for attention. Cats are more loners even though i have a few cats they rather keep to themselves

hi sweetz according to me pets r the lovely creatures who gives u company and if u have decided to keep one of those il suggest u keep a dog cause dogs are not only faithful they are more intimate to human. they can take part in ur emotions.wel if u wana keep a cat then i must say im experiencd with those little swetties they r very self centered creatures and they are not very loyal
dogs can even act as your security if u train them wel i dnt have any idea about cats in that case. and regarding the space they take depends on their size so now its your turn to decide
