Depends what you're going to do on your year off. Most professionals use the time for research and writing. One of my very favorite places in the whole world is Uruapan, Michoacan, Mexico. Mild climate year-round, wonderful people, fantastic food, and inexpensive. On the outskirts it's quiet. There is a national park close by for nature walks. You could live very well for under ten grand, I would guess. Throw the books and computer in the back of the truck and drive down. A warning however: you will have such a good time you'll never want to come back to the States. You'll make too many friends.

You should look at Moab Ut. located near 2 national parks, and the Colorado river. Also the Lasal mountains, with 13000 foot peaks. The best time is Sept. to Nov. The town gets a little busy, but in 15 minutes you can be alone , surrouned by amazing scenery. good luck
