I've heard from different people that they were unable to determine the sex of the baby during their ultrasound. I am 25 weeks pregnant and having my first ultrasound tomorrow. I've been waiting (impatiently) to find out whether my child is a boy or a girl and the thought of not finding out (this is my only ultrasound) is making me nervous. Is it likely that they will be able to tell me?

They were able to determine gender by ultrasound at 23 1/2 weeks for me. Please be aware that an ultrasound is not 100% correct and there have been women who were told via ultrasound they were expecting a boy and out came a girl. With that being said, at 25 weeks they should be able to determine gender (not 100% of course) ONLY if the baby cooperates. Depending on the postion of your child during the ultrasound they may not be able to see between the legs. I was pregnant with twins and although I knew I was having one boy at 23 1/2 weeks, I did not find out the sex of my other baby until 28 weeks because she would not open her legs and give the ultrasound tech a clear shot. Be prepared for the possibilty of an uncooperative baby, although I think you will be fine ;)

This is how it works: its really quite simple. If the baby is turned with its back to you, nobody will know its gender. If the baby faces toward the camera, you may or may not get the right view-
it could be that its a girl, or maybe a boy, but you just can't get a good look at the right parts. If the baby is facing the camera and you have a good look, if its a boy, you'll see the penis. Its just that simple. You could ask the ultrasound tech to help you maybe get the baby to turn - tell the tech how important this is to you.
If she's cool, she'll try to help (i rubbed my belly until my son turned around, and the tech said "oh, my, my; there is the penis - goodness, who could miss that?) Ha! big like his dad.

In all probability you will find out: Amniocentesis would be an option if the sex could, for some reason, not be determined and you still desperately wanted to know. Whatever sex, doctors will be able to tell you whether or not you have a healthy and well developing child and I'm sure this would be the most important thing for you to hear. Congratulations: all the best to you and your baby.

It will all depend on the baby's movements that day, if it's covering/hiding itself, has it's legs crossed...etc. You'll just have to wait and see, and there is still no guarantee. And I agree with the heartbeat philosophy. The lower it is, under 140 it's a girl. 140-145 or higher, it's a boy, just keep in mind the heartbeat is always high in the early stages of pregnancy, so if you don't find out on your ultrasound, keep the heartbeat in mind and if it's consistently high until the end of pregnancy it will be a boy. Congrats !

I agree: if Baby is cooperating, you might find out - but it may not be 100%! A girlfriend of mine was told she was definately having a boy, and when Madeline made her appearance, she obviously left something behind!

If the area between the legs is visible, the ultrasonographer may be able to give you a good guess, but if the baby is on its side or the back is being presenting, you probably won't be able to tell. My daughter was lucky, wanted to know and found out accurately with both her son and her daughter.

Good luck and congrats!!!

At 25 weeks, if baby cooperates then you may be able to find out.
Keep in mind that it's not like you'll never know. You'll find out eventually! :-)
We had an u/s with our first and found out at about 16-17 weeks. With our other two we didn't have any u/s at all and didn't know. Honestly, not knowing was a lot better.

As long as the baby is turned so they can tell the gender of the child then theycan tell but you meight have more then one ultra sound depending on your pregnancy so there is always time to find out you can also tell by the heart beat of the child the lower the heart beat it is a girl the higher the heart beat it is a boy

I was just as worried as you. To let you know if the tech. says it's a boy she/he is probably right. It was easy to point out my son it looks like a turtle head lol.. but my daughter was a little different. when looking for the "parts" a girl looks like she has a hamburger between her legs. Ask the Tech to look at the beginning and then last after the other checks. You might get lucky and your baby is ready to show "IT" off. I wish you the best of luck!!!!! TK
