I have 1 beta in a small fish tank. How do you change it? Like, hoe do you get rid of all the poop? I don't have a filter on it. I can't drain the rocks cause all the poop won't go away.

Pour half of the water from the bowl into another container and put your betta in it. Take the bowl and rinse the rocks out until there is no more poop. Only use hot water. Never use soap or bleach or any kind of cleaner. Once the rocks are clean, put a bit of water in the bowl, make sure it's about the same temp as the water with the betta, then pour the betta and it's water back into the bowl. You don't want to do a complete water change because you don't want to put the fish into shock and kill him. Good Luck!

Here's how I do it. My bettas are always happy after I am done.

1. I fill the cups they came in with clean water the same temp as their tank water (treat yours if you are in the city)
2. I catch each betta and place them in their respective cups.
3. I dump all of the water from the tank.
4. I run water that is as hot as it can get (I am very careful when I do this) into the tank until all of the rocks are covered by a few inches. I swish it around and dump it.
5. I repeat step 4 until nothing else comes out of the rocks. This usually only takes five minutes at most.
6. I fill the tank to the brim with water as hot as I can get it and let it sit while I do the other two tanks I have to get them to this point.
7. I scrub any water rings and water spots off. I have cold water running to put my hand under when I do this b/c the water in the tank is still very hot.
8. I dump the tank again and check for anything coming from the rocks. If there is I'll swish water a few more times. If not I move on.
9. I fill the tanks with water the same temp as that in their cups. I let it settle and place their plants.
10. I put the bettas back in their bowls and give them a little to eat.

I do a 100% water change because I have one gallon bowls. If I only did partials my fish would be poisoned from all of the build-up of "gunk" in the water. If you have no filter I would advise you do 100% as well. To judge the temp I put a finger in the cup and a finger in the tank. When they feel indentical I call it good and go with that temp. Good Luck to your fishy and you!

Move the fish to a smaller bowl or baggie with the old fish water. Clean the fish tank and rocks thouroughly (put the rocks in a collander). Use vinegar for hard water stains, but rinse, rinse, rinse. Put the tank back together with fresh water. Use a net or ladle (or your hand) to gently scoop the fish back into the clean tank. This only needs to be done every two weeks. On the in-between weeks, simply replace 1/2 the water in the tank with fresh water.
